About This Campaign

I first met David Takaruza about two years ago. On 24 September 2026, he won the men’s 21 km trail run at The GRATITUDE Run at Dornier Wines in 1 hour, 35 minutes and 6 seconds.
I recently met up with him to get to know him a bit better. What stayed with me after our talk was how often he returned to wanting to help his mother.
David, who is 22 years old, lives in Nomzamo in the Helderberg/Somerset West area, with his mother and two sisters. He was born in Zimbabwe and moved to South Africa when he was 2. His mother gets occasional work, one sister is looking for a job, and the other is still at school. Money is tight, and there are times when there is very little food at home.
He keeps training while looking for work.
“Running releases me from my worries and gives me something to work towards, and whatever I can bring home (prizes) from races helps my family.”, says David
