About This Campaign
From October 2025 to January 2026, wildfires swept across the Overberg in the Western Cape, burning 44,384 hectares of fynbos, including 10,378 hectares within the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy.
While devastating, this has created a rare window to tackle invasive alien plant regrowth. Fire clears mature invasives but also triggers mass germination of their seeds. If we act now, before these plants mature and reseed, we can dramatically reduce their spread.
An estimated 5,571 hectares now need urgent clearing. Without intervention, invasive plants will outcompete native fynbos, threatening one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots and the many endangered species it supports.
Our experienced clearing teams, predominantly women from local communities, are ready to do this critical work. Our target of R4.4 million per annum supports the employment of five community-led contracting teams, each comprising 10 individuals, as well as one dedicated project manager.
