Ntambanana Community Drive

My name is Siphesihle Manzini. I come from Ntambanana, a deep rural area located just outside of Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal. If you have ever traveled through our beautiful province, you know that places like Ntambanana are rich in community spirit and culture, but they are also completely cut off from the economic opportunities that people in big cities take for granted.

Out here, life is a daily struggle. Ntambanana is an area where unemployment is incredibly high, and many households survive entirely on elderly pension grants or child support grants. There are no big shopping centres here, no large factories for employment, and water and transport infrastructure are constant challenges. Because we are so deep in the rural outskirts, the cost of just traveling to town to buy food or clothes eats away at what little money families have. When you are forced to choose between paying for a taxi to go look for work or buying a loaf of bread, things like "festive cheer" become an impossible luxury.
