Protecting South Africa's Endangered Flora

The Pondo Bushman's Tea tree is one of the rarest and most endangered plant species in South Africa, with fewer than 50 known trees in each of the four remaining wild populations. Alarmingly, the main population falls outside of a designated conservation zone, putting it at significant risk from habitat loss, climate change, and human activity.

The Pondo Bushman's Tea tree (Athrixia phylicoides) faces additional challenges to conservation due to its extremely low fruit set, largely caused by a gall-forming insect that attacks its flowers. This insect parasitism severely impacts the tree's ability to reproduce, making seed production both rare and unpredictable. As a result, seeds are difficult to obtain for cultivation or replanting efforts.

Given these complications, the tree remains largely unknown in cultivation, and efforts to propagate it are limited. Conservation efforts must focus not only on protecting the remaining wild populations but also on researching ways to mitigate the impact of the gall-forming insect and encourage successful pollination and fruit set....
