Life in the Drakensberg has always been rooted in community, but after losing our little cousin Fergus in 2006, that sense of community took on a deeper meaning. We turned grief into service, beginning with peanut butter sandwiches and learning resources for five local preschools. What started as small acts of kindness grew into a commitment to education, opportunity and powering possibility.
In honour of little Fergie, we chose to invest in the futures of other children, guided by the simple truth: it takes a village to raise a child.
Too many rural South African children still grow up without access to quality early learning. Today, 81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning. Without intervention, the gap only widens.
In 2007 we opened Royal Drakensberg Primary. What began as a school for our own children soon became something much bigger. Today, the Royal Drakensberg Education Trust supports over 1,000 children across 20 preschools and a growing independent primary school.
